Join the IEEE

If you are an IEEE member and live in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, you are automatically a member of the UKRI Section. Full details of how to become an IEEE member are on the IEEE Membership website.

If you are applying for Student Membership, you can only apply on-line. If you are applying for Full Membership, you are encouraged to apply on-line; however you can alternatively print out and complete a paper membership application form.

UKRI Membership Development

IEEE, the world's largest professional association has become even bigger, surpassing the all time record, with 383,034 members at the end of October 2009 - an annual increase of 3.9%. Unfortunately, in the UK&RI Section there was an annual drop of 0.5% in membership during the same period. Nevertheless, with 10,555 members at the end of October we are still the second largest section in IEEE. Fortunately, there are some positive indicators. Our October monthly growth rate of 2.3% was higher than 1.7% for the whole IEEE. Partial results from November indicate that growth rate is accelerating and we may be able to return to a healthy annual growth by the end of the year. All IEEE members can help achieve this ambitious goal by encouraging colleagues to join IEEE and by renewing memberships promptly.

This year a special incentive system is in operation, called Member-Get-a-Member program, which awards US$15 for each professional member recruited. Full details and the rules of the programme can be found at http://ieee.org/mgm. So please get a member or two (or more)! Members can use the reward vouchers to reduce the IEEE renewal costs, pay for other products or services, or donate them to one of IEEE charitable foundations.

Another great initiative is a special New Member Website (available from December) and Orientation Webcasts. Although the wide range of benefits offered by IEEE is not immediately obvious to new members, it gives access to technical information, career development opportunities and many more great benefits. New benefits are being continuously added to address technical and non-technical needs of IEEE members. To take advantage of these exclusive IEEE member benefits visit http://www.ieee.org/benefits.

Don't forget to renew your membership before the end of the year - just click on http://www.ieee.org/renew. Although you can technically renew until the end of February 2010, it saves IEEE a lot of money, e-mails, paper, etc. when you do it earlier.

Please note that IEEE offers up to 50% reduction in dues in special circumstances, such as low income, retirement, unemployment, or permanent disability. For details on this or any other membership enquiries please contact member-services@ieee.org or Adam K. Jastrzebski at A.K.Jastrzebski@ieee.org.

Upgrade to Senior Member

If you can answer yes to these three questions, you are eligible to upgrade your status to the grade of Senior Member:
  • Are you an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive or originator in an IEEE field?
  • Have you been in professional practice for at least ten years (can include 3 years for degree study in an IEEE-designated field, 4 years for degree plus masters, or 5 years for a PhD)?
  • Have you shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years? This can be in roles such as team leader, task supervisor, researcher with some measure of success (papers), or faculty developing and teaching courses with research and publications.
To receive further information, see the IEEE Senior Members page.
